Wednesday 17 April at 8pm we will show in Cafe Amsterdam the American film "The Master" (2012), written, directed, and co-produced by Paul Thomas Anderson and starring Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams.
The film tells the story of Freddie, a Second World War veteran struggling to adjust to the post-war society and uncertain of his future, who meets Lancaster Dodd, the charismatic leader of a religious movement known as "The Cause". Lancaster Dodd (the Master) sees something in Freddie and accepts him into the movement. First impressed by Lancaster Dodd, later Freddie becomes more skeptical about him, his ideas and the movement.
Film shows the impact and dangers religious movements and sects as the Scientology Church and the Unification Church (Moon sect) with their charismatic leaders can have on young persons. The person of Lancaster Dodd has been inspired on Ron Hubbard, the first leader of the Scientology Church.
"The Master" is more an art house film then a mainstream Hollywood film, still was very successful, got very good reviews and received three Oscar award nominations.
