“Salmon Fishing in the Yemen” (2011)
Wednesday 26 September at 8pm we will show in Café Amsterdam the British film "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen". This is a 2011 British (romantic) drama and political satire directed by Swedish Lasse Hallstrom and starring Ewan McGregor, Emily Blunt and Amr Waked. The story of the film is based on the novel of the same name by Paul Torday. Storyline: Consultant Harriet Talbot, representing a wealthy sheikh from Yemen, asks Fred Jones, the British government expert in fisheries, for help to fulfill the sheikh's wish to introduce salmon fly fishing in Yemen. Fred initially rejects the idea as impossible, but the British Prime Minister via his secretary, pressures him to start this project as a "good will" story of Anglo-Arab cooperation among all the ongoing turmoil of anti western demonstrations in the Middle East.
The film received generally favorable reviews from critics as being as a charming film with beautiful photography (filmed on location in London, the Scottish highlands and the Atlas mountains of Morocco).
