Wednesday 24 October at 8 pm we will show in Cafe Amsterdam the American film "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" (2012), directed by Stephen Daldry and starring Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock, Thomas Horn, Max von Sydow and John Goodman. The film is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Jonathan Safran Foer. "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" was one of the films which has been nominated at the last Oscar festival as best film of the year.
Storyline; Oskar of 9 years old is convinced that his father, who died in the 9/11 attacks, has left a final message somewhere in the city. Feeling disconnected from his mother and driven by a mind that refuses to believe in things that can't be observed, Oscar begins searching New York for the lock that fits a key he found in his father's closet. His journey takes him beyond his own loss to a greater understanding of the world.

British/Indian film: “Thrishna” Wednesday 17 October at 8pm we will show in Cafe Amsterdam the 2011 British film "Trishna", directed by Michael Winterbottom and starring Freida Pinto and Riz Ahmed. The film was shot on location in India in Rajasthan and Bombay. Based on Thomas Hardy's classic novel "Tess of the D'Urbervilles", "Trishna" tells the story the the Indian woman Trishna from a small village whose life is destroyed by a combination of love and circumstances. Thrishna meets a wealthy young British businessman Jay, who has come to India to work in his father's hotel business. Thrishna goes to work for Jay and they fall in love. But despite their feelings for each other, they cannot escape the conflicting pressures of a rural society, which is changing rapidly through industrialisation, urbanisation and education. Thrishna's tragedy is that she is torn between the Indian traditions of her family life and the dreams and ambitions that her education has given her. Come to Cafe Amsterdam to watch this film interesting film set in modern India. This is a 2011 American political drama film directed by George Clooney and starring Ryan Gosling, George Clooney, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Marisa Tomei. In the light of the campaigns of Obama and Romney for the coming presidential elections in the USA this is a very interesting and up to date film.
"The Ides of March" takes place during the frantic last days before a heavily contested Ohio presidential primary , when an idealistic campaign press secretary finds himself involved in a political scandal that threatens to destroy his candidate's shot at the presidency.
When you want to see a good and realistic film about the way Americans elect their leaders, then come Wednesday night at 8pm to Cafe Amsterdam.

"The Memory of a Killer" (Title in Dutch: "De Zaak Alzheimer"). This is a 2003 film directed by Erik Van Looy, based on the novel "De Zaak Alzheimer" by Jef Geeraerts. At the moment a Hollywood remake of the film is in development.
Storyline: Vincke and Verstuyft are one of the best detective teams of the police force of the Belgium city Antwerp. When they are confronted with the disappearance of a top official and the murder of two prostitutes, the trial leads to the assassin Angelo Ledda. Since Ledda starts showing symptoms of Alzheimer's, it's getting difficult to complete his contracts. When he has to murder a 12-year old call-girl, he refuses and becomes a target himself. While Vincke and Verstuyft are chasing him, Ledda is taking care of his employers.
Although made with the small budget of 2,500,000 euro, the film look highly professional and was a was one of the most success full films in Belgium cinema's. The story of the film is partly inspired on events in Belgium in 1995 with the kidnapping and killing of children by Marc Dutroux and the assumed prostitution networks within Belgium high society and the corruption within the Belgium police force.
We will show the film in the original Dutch/Flemish version with English subtitles.

“Salmon Fishing in the Yemen” (2011) Wednesday 26 September at 8pm we will show in Café Amsterdam the British film "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen". This is a 2011 British (romantic) drama and political satire directed by Swedish Lasse Hallstrom and starring Ewan McGregor, Emily Blunt and Amr Waked. The story of the film is based on the novel of the same name by Paul Torday. Storyline: Consultant Harriet Talbot, representing a wealthy sheikh from Yemen, asks Fred Jones, the British government expert in fisheries, for help to fulfill the sheikh's wish to introduce salmon fly fishing in Yemen. Fred initially rejects the idea as impossible, but the British Prime Minister via his secretary, pressures him to start this project as a "good will" story of Anglo-Arab cooperation among all the ongoing turmoil of anti western demonstrations in the Middle East. The film received generally favorable reviews from critics as being as a charming film with beautiful photography (filmed on location in London, the Scottish highlands and the Atlas mountains of Morocco).
